Canon Shows Off Beautiful Footage from Its 8K HDR Cinema Cam

Canon makes some amazing equipment, and this is none the truer when it comes to its cinema gear.

Luckily for us, the company just released a video showing off its 8K HDR cinema camera. And it looks like the next generation is so amazing that we might not even be able to perceive it with what we've got going on now.

If that isn't the definition of hype, we don't know what is.

As FStoppers points out, most of us won’t be able to view it in anything more than 4K and those of us that could view it in 8K probably wouldn’t be able to do so.

Nonetheless, Canon is offering us all a glimpse of the future – even if we can’t see it yet.

Film director Ichiro Shimada said this of Canon’s gear, “Canon's 8K technology delivers not only extremely high resolution, but also high dynamic range and rich color expression.”

For those of you that are curious about it, the still-in-development camera captures 8192×4320 pixel raw footage with “precision HDR” with tons of colors, naturally.

Interestingly, FStoppers points out that Canon’s is not only going full bore with 8K for traditional applications but also for more “immersive experiences.” Given the advances in VR and the prospects for using virtual reality for live entertainment events, this comment makes even more sense. Currently, Turner Sports has partnered with a lot of tech companies to do just that for live basketball games.

The film, “Roots of Japan,” is a little over five minutes long.

You can view it over on YouTube by clicking here. A fairly contemplative piece, it looks impressive in 4K so it’s tough to imagine how much more 8K can do for it.

As always, we would love to know your thoughts about the video and the future of Canon’s product plans in the comment section below.
