Marek Musil Captures The Atmosphere At Burning Man Festivals On Three Different Continents
Spectacular photos from the famous Burning Man festival and its two sister festivals AfrikaBurn and MidBurn by Marek Musil, photographer, and artist from Prague, Czech Republic. Maker documented three largest Burn festivals in Nevada (Burning Man), Israel (Midburn), and South Africa (AfrikaBurn).
Burning Man, Nevada
Burning man is a world-famous annual event in the western United States at Black Rock City, Nevada. Its values are reflected in the organically developed ten principles that allow ‘burners’ enjoy the cohesive and creative atmosphere: radical inclusion, radical self-reliance, radical self-expression, communal effort, civic responsibility, gifting, decommodification, participation, immediacy and leave no trace. The main value in community’s culture is immediacy, which indicates: experience before theory, moral relationships before politics, survival before services, roles before jobs, a ritual before symbolism, work before vested interest, and participant support before sponsorship. First held in 1986 as a beach party in San Francisco, the festival has become a memorable celebration of self-expression and creativity for tens of thousands of people.
AfrikaBurn, South Africa
AfrikaBurn is the largest official Burning Man regional event held annually in the Tankwa Karoo National Park in South Africa. Since 2007, it follows the same ten principles as the original Burning Man and has become the biggest art festival in Africa. It’s a community of participants who come together to create art, burning structures, costume, performance, theme camps, music, mutant vehicles and much more.
Midburn, Israel
Midburn is the second largest official regional Burning Man event held annually in the Negev Desert in southern Israel since 2014 after a group of burners decided to bring the spirit of a festival in Nevada to Israel. A temporary city is built for 6 days creating a platform for communal lifestyle, creativity, art, and self-expression. The festival follows ten original Burning Man principles which reflect the ethos and culture of the event.
